A thorough study of the works of Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (d. 505 AH) reveals that he authored three monumental books on the Shafi‘i school of jurisprudence: al-Basit, al-Wasit, and al-Wajiz. The third of these al-Wajiz was derived from the first two but incorporated additional material not found in them; consequently, it became a foundational text within the school, garnering significant attention from scholars who dedicated themselves to explaining, clarifying, summarizing, and verifying the hadiths cited therein. Among those who devoted their efforts to this work was the leading Shafi‘i scholar Imam Abu al-Qasim ‘Abd al-Karim ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini al-Rafi‘i (d. 623 AH), who produced a comprehensive and exhaustive commentary titled Fath al-‘Aziz ‘ala Kitab al-Wajiz.
