This novel works to salvage a crucial part of Amman's marginalized memory, a memory on the verge of being lost to oblivion. From this remote vantage point, it offers a glimpse into the city's landscape, revealing what the present cannot. Mohammed Al-Jalous has chosen to chronicle the transgression of these margins in a city poised to leave its innocent childhood behind and transform from a village—a margin in itself—into a sprawling metropolis burdened by its own peripheries.
