Shostakovich is one of the most significant Russian musicians of the twentieth century. His music was characterized by a departure from popular and romantic styles—a stance that ran counter to the tenets of "socialist realism" and provoked the wrath of Stalin. Indeed, his work was deemed unsuitable for a Russian composer. This marked the beginning of a period of profound personal crisis and suffering for Shostakovich; unlike Stravinsky, Prokofiev, or Rachmaninoff, he was—for personal reasons—unable to leave the country. He remained in Russia, compelled to submit to and align himself with various pressures. Nevertheless, he wrote these memoirs in secret and managed to have them smuggled out with the help of the journalist and musician Solomon Volkov.
