"Alexandria Under a Cloud" is the third installment of Ibrahim Abdel Meguid’s *Alexandria Trilogy*—a work that defies the conventional structure of a trilogy. Rather than following a consistent set of protagonists throughout, the narrative centers on a great city at three pivotal turning points in its history. The first novel, *No One Sleeps in Alexandria*, depicts the city as a cosmopolitan hub during the Second World War—a place defined by tolerance among diverse religions and ethnicities, even as Egyptians endured the hardships of wartime. The second, *Birds of Amber*, explores the city in the aftermath of the 1956 Suez Crisis, capturing the mass exodus of its foreign residents and the subsequent transformation into an exclusively Egyptian city, a shift that fundamentally altered much of its culture.
This final novel focuses on the city during the 1970s, a period that saw the emergence of a new wave of religious extremism—an ideology that forged an alliance with the political regime. As a result, the city began to shed its distinct Egyptian spirit; its physical spaces and the customs of its people were transformed, tolerance waned, and the city bade farewell to both its inherent Egyptian character and the remnants of its once-vibrant cosmopolitan soul. Together, these three works form a trilogy that examines the city through its various manifestations; while they can be read in sequence, each novel also stands perfectly well on its own.
