The book discusses 24 literary figures, only two of whom are women: Salma Khadra Jayyusi and Fadwa Tuqan.
Being male is not a prerequisite for "creative paternity." A female poet can also be a "father" in this sense; historical precedence, the act of drawing inspiration from one’s work, following in one’s footsteps, and contributing to the foundational development of a cultural landscape—all of these constitute "creative paternity," a realm in which a female poet or writer stands on equal footing with her male counterpart. Furthermore, Fadwa Tuqan is known as the "mother" of Palestinian poetry. Here, too, being female is not a prerequisite for "maternity"—for the "mother" of something is its origin and foundation. Rather, it is for the sake of gendered, contrasting terminology that a male writer might be called the "father" of a genre (such as the "father of poetry" or the "father of the novel"), while a female writer might be referred to as the "mother" of a genre, or by some other equivalent designation.
