"This is mature writing, characterized by an intelligent and sophisticated narrative that follows its protagonist—along with the other characters—across vast expanses of time and space. It is a 'small, personal epic' woven around complex familial relationships, moments of triumph, and crushing defeats. The narrative world it constructs possesses an uncompromising, authentic realism—evident both in the development of its characters and in the unfolding, escalating stages of the story."
