جورجي أمادو (1912-2001) من أهم كتاب الأدب البرازيلي. ترجمت أعماله إلى حوالى خمسين لغة.
في قرية باهيا البرازيلية، أمضى أرشانجو حياته كرجل بسيط يعملُ ساعياً في كليّة الطب. قُربُه من أبناء مجتمعه ونضاله لتحقيق العدالة الاجتماعية والانتصار للفقراء دفعاه إلى تأليف أربعة كتب عن حياة أهل باهيا. لكن النخب البرازيلية، الذين لم يكترثوا له يوماً، كان يكفيهم أن يشيد به عالمٌ أميركي حائزٌ «جائزة نوبل» ليبدؤوا احتفاءهم به ويصنعوا منه رمزاً دعائياً.
يبحر أمادو في عوالم البسيطين والمهمّشين في البرازيل، منتصراً لهم، ساخراً من الرأسمالية المُزيفة للهوية الوطنية، ومن نخب المثقفين الذين باتت السطحية سمتهم.
