The irrational impulses of the Arab—and specifically the Iraqi—intellectual are not necessarily a flaw; in many instances, they may even be a necessity. Yet, when these impulses enter the arena of political action and activity, they carry boundless, unpredictable risks. An intellectual who understands the gap between their own impulses and the rational commitment required for responsible political action could, in theory, harness the fervor of these impulses to generate something constructive. However, a long history of engagement by Arab and Iraqi intellectuals in political and ideological spheres has demonstrated the exact opposite.
In the hands of creators and scholars, both fictional and theoretical texts have often been transformed into utopias—utopias burdened by the misguided conviction that they are practically implementable. Instead of seeking to uncover the complexities of the human condition or to illuminate the dark—or dimly lit—corners of the human psyche, the poet has often moved in the opposite direction: attempting to impose "magical" solutions through the sheer power of words. They enter the earthly fray, hand-in-hand with the political adventurer, to put these visions into practice. Given their limited practical influence and lack of real-world agency, the poet or writer of fiction typically ends up siding with the politician—or operating in their shadow—supplying the emotional intensity that the politician lacks. Over time, they find themselves diminished, reduced to mere cheerleaders and sycophants for the very politician who has seized the reins of power.
This played out in a highly tangible and historical manner through the nationalist culture and vision of the Ba'ath Party, as well as the culture that stood in opposition to it in Iraq. On one side, there was the poet who envisioned nothing less than a "paradise as vast as the Arab homeland," while on the other, there was the opposing poet who envisioned a paradise defined by "the blue overalls of the working class." Together, they ushered in a blood-soaked ordeal—one that ultimately culminated in the rise of a dictator. For more than half a century, this bloody arena—fueled by clashing cultural impulses that donned the guise of politics and spilled into the streets—has left the Arab, and specifically the Iraqi, with no room to breathe freely. Just as this arena of irresponsible passions served as a ladder for the dictator’s ascent, the dictator himself built a ladder toward his own inevitable end.
These pages are, in effect, a diary—entries I wrote for the opposition newspaper *Al-Mu'tamar*, published in London. They reflect, within the time remaining for the dictator, the unfolding of events as they moved toward the end of the nightmare.
