"Morrie, my old professor, was crystal clear about what truly mattered in life.
I craved that clarity—every troubled, tormented soul I’ve ever known has craved it.
He would always say, 'Ask me anything.'
And so, I drew up this list: death, fear, aging, greed, marriage, family, society, forgiveness, and a meaningful life.
Have you ever had a true teacher? A teacher who saw you as something raw yet precious—a gem that, with a bit of wisdom, could be polished until it shone with a dazzling brilliance? If you are fortunate enough to find your way to such a mentor, you will always find your way through life.
The final course taught by my old professor took place once a week at his home, by a window in his study where he could watch a small hibiscus plant unfurl its pink blossoms.
The class met on Tuesdays; it required no textbooks. Its subject was the meaning of life, and it was taught through the lens of lived experience.
The lesson begins here and now."

وهكذا، وضعتُ هذه القائمة: الموت، الخوف، التقدم في السن، الطمع، الزواج، الأسرة، المجتمع، المغفرة، الحياة ذات المعنى.
هل سبق أن حظيتَ بمدرِّس حقيقي؟ مدرِّس رآك كشيء خام لكنه ثمين، جوهرة يمكن، مع بعض الحكمة، أن تُصقَل وتصير لامعةً تخلب الأبصار؟ إذا كنت محظوظاً بما يكفي لتجد طريقك إلى أستاذ كهذا، فستجد دائماً طريقك في الحياة.
الفصل الأخير في حياة أستاذي القديم كان يَلتقي مرة في الأسبوع في منزله، بجوار نافذة في مكتبه حيث يستطيع مشاهدة نبتة كركديه صغيرة وهي تطرح أزهارها الوردية.
كان الفصل يجتمع أيام الثلاثاء، ولم يتطلَّب كُتباً، كان موضوعه معنى الحياة، وكان يُدرَّس من وحي التجربة.
