The novel explores the theme of traveling across various countries in pursuit of all that might satisfy the protagonist’s passion for art, music, and beauty—set in nineteenth-century Europe: the Europe of Beethoven, Stendhal, and Casanova, a time and place that saw the birth of major literary movements. The author weaves together this devotion to art with the tender emotions of love—for a fiancée and a friend—alongside a deep longing for one’s homeland. It is an instinctive journey undertaken by the protagonist, Friedrich, in his earnest quest for love; the novel draws its contours from actual history, unfolding like a grand mural from an era defined by love and art.
