Major revolutions are like great earthquakes; the initial, massive tremor is invariably followed by a succession of aftershocks. This continues until the earth—with all that it bears upon its surface and conceals within its depths—finally settles, and the unfolding saga of intertwined destinies reaches its conclusion—the fates of the revolutionaries and their adversaries alike. Some among the revolutionaries may meet a dark end, mirroring the suffering they once inflicted upon their enemies; conversely, some of their adversaries may eventually attain a glorious fate—much like the victors—though perhaps only after a long, bitter struggle in some distant corner of the world. Hunters may find themselves becoming the hunted, and the pursuers may end up as the pursued; meanwhile, the prey may transform into a predatory hunter, and the fearful may become the source of fear. A time may even arrive when the victim and the executioner become indistinguishable—when the victim, having gained power, adopts the very methods of their former tormentor against new adversaries, invoking the same justifications once used against them. In such moments, the antagonists differ only to the extent that they resemble one another; they may find that they have no choice but to excuse—or even exalt—their former enemy.
