Beginning at the very end, the novel *An Unanswered Call* by Khadija Ashour—published by The Arab Scientific Publishers (2025)—immediately piques the reader's curiosity to discover what transpired before the phrase "An Unanswered Call" became the final sight Mariam beheld as she breathed her last. From this pivotal event, the narrative transports us back to the beginning to trace the antecedents and circumstances that culminated in such a tragic end for Mariam—and to explore the profound impact of this loss upon her three siblings, who were denied the chance to answer her final call. Thus, the mystery of Mariam’s sudden death remains the missing piece of the puzzle—one that will not be revealed until the very final lines of the novel.
