He did not return... We prepared the food he loved, prepared many types of food, and left him a place that accommodated his dreams and the stories we collected in his absence. It is an enumeration of the long episodes of waiting that increased our father’s experience in pursuing the fantasies that presented themselves at the window of our house as the possibility that his person had arrived. We used to learn from your father the forms of rounding the back, heart, and eyes. He was serious about waiting, aware of repeated disappointments. He was living a complete hell, repeating himself, repeatedly falling into longing every minute, and exercising rare rights to trust that you would come back. Many times he imagined that you had returned. He stood ready, ready to heal his wounds with your scent. Every time he held on to two stars, and every time he lost tears from his eyes due to longing and pain. Come back...we are doomed to hope.
