The World of Saddam Hussein, by Mehdi Haider. This novel, first published in 2003, is not a historical text, but rather the work of a figment of the imagination, exploiting facts to build a fantasy world parallel to the real world, sometimes corresponding, sometimes at variance. It reads like an exciting mystery, with intrigue and violence, telling the story of a boy from a poor village in Iraq, on through adulthood.
