Renowned Syrian director Alaa al-Din Kokash enters the world of the novel with his latest creative work, *Al-Tukhūm* (The Frontiers/Boundaries). This is the fourth book by Kokash, who is well-known for his successful career as a television director spanning over four decades. His previous literary contributions include four satirical political plays, a collection of short stories, and a travelogue titled *Traveling Far Away: A Journey Through Thailand and Malaysia*—all of which were published as standalone books or featured in various Arab magazines.
Regarding this new endeavor, Kokash remarks, "My relationship with writing is not a recent development; I have been writing for a long time." He notes that he has entered a new phase in his creative and professional life, one in which he intends to focus primarily on writing and authorship.
The events of *Al-Tukhūm* unfold within the world of intellectuals, where Kokash explores the relationships they maintain with one another. The characters inhabiting the novel occupy significant positions on the social ladder. Drawing from his own deep familiarity with this milieu and his insight into what happens behind the scenes, Kokash sheds light on the "hidden" lives of these individuals. He has assigned them pseudonyms—not to expose or disparage them, nor to highlight their pretenses, but rather to reveal the realities of life as they truly unfold. These are realities that, if each of us were to look honestly at ourselves and the contradictions surrounding us, we would find reflected in our own lives. “The Frontiers” (Al-Tukhūm) is more than just a novel; it is the vision of an intellectual writer who observes with a keen eye, scrutinizing details and the margins of life. Through his writing, he delves into the events of the real world, uncovering its negative aspects and hidden truths—stripping away the polished, superficial veneer that society strives to maintain.
