Qariban min al-Qalb al-Mutawahishقريباً من القلب المتوحش

With this inaugural work, Lispector astonished critics, earning their admiration; indeed, they likened her literary style to that of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce. The story traces the inner journey of Joana from childhood into adulthood, exploring her contemplations on identity, solitude, and her connection to the world around her. Joana herself articulates her inner life, contrasting her experiences as a girl with those of an adult woman, and—guided by the thread of memory—she drifts at times into the past, and at others into the present. Yet, the young Joana is no mere motherless orphan living first with her father, then with her aunt, and finally in a boarding school.
