Dhat al-Jarihaالذات الجريحة

'Wounded self', a study on identity problems in Iraq specifically and the Arab world in general, by Iraqi thinker and writer Salim Mattar (b. 1956, Baghdad). The author looks how some societies (ie: Western, liberal, nationalist, Marxist...) have not ceased to notify 'others' of their backwardness, stupidity, etc. in all aspects of their lives and minds, and related problems of homeland and personal identity of the 'others'. He stresses the need of a national identity that includes a cultural and human dimension that recognizes diversity. First published in 1997, still pertinent today.
