In most of his novels, Tahar Ben Jelloun explores the themes of migration, the challenges of integration, and the persistent dream—held by those who have left their home countries, particularly Morocco—of eventually returning once they have resolved their economic struggles.
Religion, social norms, lifestyles, childhood memories, and the question of belonging—all these elements give rise to further inquiries that only deepen one’s sense of bewilderment. Compounding this is the situation of the children: born in France, they have no memories of their parents' homeland, nor can they tolerate the lifestyle and social values their parents seek to impose upon them. Mohamed loses his peace of mind—it is the children, and the lives they lead, that unsettle him.
After retiring, Mohamed returns to his home country—yet even there, he finds that he can no longer attain peace.
