My mother’s arms are forests of sugarcane; her legs are runaway horses; her body sways like a bottle of wine in the nocturnal wilderness. I become my mother—interlacing my fingers with those of a poet whom my mother once abandoned—and I step into the role of his lover. These stories radiate a magic that remains far more beautiful than anything that could ever be written about them.

قصص قصيرة، بل اعترافات جريئة، تجاوزت حدود السرد المعتاد. تحمل جرأة لا مثيل لها، تتناول موضوع الأسرة والمجتمع والحياة والدين والحدود الملتهبة بين الرجل والمرأة. لكنها جرأة لا تترك دليل إدانة. فما إن تظن أنك قادر على الاتهام حتى تتراجع سريعًا. لا تتركك تهدأ وهي تأخذك في عالم الليل الغريب والمريب، وعلى ضفاف الحب المباح والمفجوع. وفي دنيا الصداقات والارتباط بالزمن والانفكاك منه؛ تُدهشُك عند مفترق العبارات والمقاطع. تتسم بغرابة الموضوعات وغرابة مقاربتها، في مناخ يسهل فيه تبادل القبل والشتائم والحبيبات وحتى الأوطان. تظنها تتحدث عن أبوين عاديين، لكنك تكتشف بصعوبة أن الأمر أعمق من ذلك وكأن امرأة تلخص قارة أو العكس. ذراعا أمي غابات من قصب السكر وساقاها خيول هاربة وجسدها يتمايل كزجاجة خمر في غابة الليل. أصير أمي، أشبك أصابعي بيد شاعر هجرتْه أمي وأصبحُ حبيبته. قصص تشع سحرًا وتظل أجمل من أي كتابة عنها.
