Shayatin al-Domino شياطين الدومينو

It is war that makes us rejoice—with utter foolishness. We rejoice at the mere word "truce," before we even grasp what it means. We rejoice that the school year ends that summer without any final exams. We rejoice because we’ve become so skilled at mimicking Umm Ali—calling out to her son from the fourth floor, in that distinct southern dialect: "Ya Hassan, do you want some *kadadish*?"—repeating it until we run out of breath, laughing all the while. We are little devils, finding joy in a game of dominoes. Joy in empty water buckets. Joy in shrapnel. Joy in the bullets scattered across the roads. Joy in the bread running out. Joy in keeping quiet about the man who robbed Elias the grocer.

That is how we were: a mass of devilish joy.

إنّها الحرب التي تجعلنا نفرح بكل غباء. الفرح بكلمة هدنة قبل أن ندرك معناها. الفرح بإتمام العام الدراسيّ ذلك الصيف دون امتحانات. الفرح لأننا كنا نجيد تقليد أم علي وهي تصرخ لابنها من الطابق الرابع باللهجة الجنوبية ذاتها: "يا حَسِن بدك كداديش"، وكنا نردّدها قدر ما كان يساعدنا النفس ونضحك. شياطين الدومينو في حالة فرح. فرح سطول المياه الفارغة. فرح الشظايا. فرح الرصاص المنثور على الطرقات. فرح انقطاع الخبز. فرح السكوت عن سارق إلياس الدكّنجي.

هكذا كنا. كتلة فرح شيطاني.
