In 2004, Iván—who runs a modest veterinary clinic in Havana and once dreamed of becoming a writer—revisits a chapter from his past: a 1977 encounter with a mysterious man he spotted walking along the seashore with two Russian the-hounds. Through a series of meetings, this man—who possessed intimate, granular details about Ramón Mercader, the assassin of Leon Trotsky—revealed unique secrets centered on the killer’s life. Armed with these revelations, Iván reconstructs the parallel trajectories of Lev Davidovich Bronstein (Trotsky) and Ramón Mercader (also known as "Jacques Mornard"), tracing how they came to occupy the roles of victim and executioner in one of the most significant and consequential crimes of the twentieth century. Their lives became inextricably linked—from the exile imposed upon Trotsky in 1929 and his arduous journey into banishment, to Mercader’s upbringing in the bourgeois circles of Barcelona, his romantic entanglements, and his hardships during and after the Spanish Civil War—as he moved between Moscow and Paris, eventually leading to their fateful meeting in Mexico. These narratives are further interwoven with Iván’s own personal and intellectual life in contemporary Havana, and his destructive relationship with "the man who loved dogs."
