These were the elements of my life: the university, home, our financial crisis, my father’s struggle, my wild imagination, my repressed desires, and my attempts at poetry. I never doubted—not for a single moment—that I would achieve my goal: that I would graduate, find work, and support my family. My life stretched out before me like a long, arduous road, yet I could clearly see its end. Then, suddenly, my path shifted. It is remarkable how a human life can be completely transformed by a minor incident or a fleeting remark. Our destiny may change simply because we happened to walk down a particular street at a specific hour; because we embarked on a certain profession rather than another path; or because we stayed late at work and, by sheer coincidence, crossed paths with someone.
