This book contains women’s narratives that carry the bitter-sweet tang of *naranj* (bitter orange).
These are stories lived by women, forming part of their own personal journeys. Most are written in the first person, allowing me to draw as close as possible to each character—to the nuances of their inner feelings—whether the subject is a woman or a man.
These are realistic accounts, told from the perspective of specific individuals, recounting with great honesty the experiences of these women. Upon tasting them, one immediately senses their bitterness; yet, in some instances, this bitterness shifts, taking on a different quality. These narratives resonate with the lives of many women across the Arab world, for the human experience—in its dreams, mistakes, and pain, as well as in its hopes and desire for change—often bears a striking resemblance from one life to the next.
Some of these stories unfold beyond the control of those who live them; others are shaped by family structures and societal systems—systems that force issues—which ought to remain visible and open to the searing heat of inquiry—into the shadows of concealment, secrecy, and a profound, oppressive silence.
Perhaps the purpose of these narratives is to invite reflection upon these harsh life paths—paths that may leave the reader with a lingering taste, much like that of a bitter orange.
Ultimately, this is a form of storytelling that seeks to transcend such circumstances, rather than perpetuate them.

في هذا الكتاب محكيات نسائية، لها طعم النارنج.
عاشتها نساء وتمثّل جزءاً من سيرهن الخاصة. كتبت أغلبها بضمير المتكلم لكي أكون قريبة جداً من الشخصية؛ من أحاسيسها الدقيقة .. سواء تعلق الأمر بامرأة أم برجل !
إنها محكيات واقعية تروى على لسان ذات بعينها، تحكي، بكثير من الصدق، ما حدث لكل هؤلاء النساء.. ما إن تتذوقها حتى تشعر بمر طعمها، لكن تلك المرارة قد تتحول في بعض النصوص لتكتسب مذاقا آخر.. محكيات تشبه قصصا كثيرة لسيدات في العالم العربي.. لأن أوضاع العديد من الناس تكاد تتشابه في الحلم، في الخطأ، في الألم.. في الأمل و الرغبة في التغيير.
هناك حكايات لا يد لصاحبتها في صنعها؛ ولكن هناك حكايات يصنعها النظام الأسري، والنظام المجتمعي الذي يدخل الأشياء التي يجب أن تظل بارزة ومعرضة لحرقة الأسئلة إلى حيز الإخفاء والكتمان والصمت الرهيب..
ولعل الغاية من هذه المحكيات هي التأمل في هذه السير القاسية التي قد تترك لدى المتلقي مذاقا بطعم النارنج!
وفي هذا السرد الخاص الذي يحكى من أجل تجاوز هذه الأوضاع لا من أجل تكريسها.
