Salman Rushdie's autobiography covering his days in exile and hiding. The title of the book comes from the pseudonym that Rushdie chose for himself when he was forced to disappear. He tells the story of the long years he spent in various secret residences under armed guard, cut off from people, and how this affected his marriages. It is a novel written in the third person in which Rushdie narrates the biography of his hero Joseph Anton. Rushdie chose this name by combining the names of his two favorite writers, «Joseph Conrad» and «Anton Chekhov».
