Novelist Doaa Ibrahim continues to craft characters scarred by the pain of the past. The protagonist is deeply affected by her tragic life with her mother, uncle, and grandmother; she cannot forgive her father for abandoning her in that quagmire and distancing himself—perhaps forever. She ruminates on the tragedy, testing its limits while cloaked in shyness and silence; yet, beneath this exterior, raging winds stir, revealing a monstrous beast that stops at nothing to destroy anyone in its path. Through a twist of fate, the young woman moves to Japan to live with her father, shifting the narrative to a foreign land. The story transports us to a new reality—one she manages to penetrate and navigate with steady resolve. Doaa Ibrahim possesses an extraordinary ability to conjure characters from nothingness and plunge them into inescapable dilemmas, allowing us to glimpse the depths of the abyss and sense its peril. In this novel, we oscillate between desire and deprivation, between the angelic and the demonic—forces as ancient as creation itself—witnessing literature as it traces letter by letter the very contours of life.
