The author of this Diwan is Maymun ibn Qays, who was born in the village of Manfuha in al-Yamamah among his people, Banu Qays ibn Tha'labah, who are a clan of the clans of Bakr ibn Wa'il ibn Rabi'ah, who were known for their eloquence. He grew up with their eloquence, and he was blind in his eyes, so he was nicknamed al-A'sha, and he was called the cymbal of the Arabs because his poetry was sung, and because of the music and melody in his poetry. When his poetic talent was strengthened, he began to travel throughout the lands of the Arabs.
