Bashir has tried to distance himself from "Daja"—a remote town whose inhabitants practice sorcery and charlatanism, and whose lives are built upon superstitions. Now, however, he is compelled to return and assume the role of its ruler; otherwise, according to the town’s governing charter, he faces certain death.
Along the way, he encounters a mysterious old man who reveals secrets about the town—secrets Bashir had assumed were unknown. As he is drawn back into the mythical world of Daja and begins to explore its bizarre past and the mysteries that lie beneath, he discovers that reality there possesses a dimension entirely different from what he had once imagined.
The author has also published several short story collections—*Koshary Masr*, *Stings of the Clock’s Hands*, and *And Pharaoh Was Kind*—as well as his first novel, *The Deceased*, which achieved notable popular success upon its release.

حاول بشير أن يبتعد عن (دجا)، بلدته المنعزلة التي يحترف أهلها السحر والدجل، ويبنون حياتهم على الخرافات، لكنه الآن مطالب بالعودة ليصبح حاكماً لها وإلا كان مصيره القتل حسب الوثيقة الحاكمة.
يلتقى في طريقه بعجوز غامض يخبره بأسرار عن بلدته التي كان يظنها مجهولة، ينغمس بشير في عالم دجا الأسطوري مرة أخرى، 
ليكتشف أثناء رحلته لاستكشاف الماضي الغريب لتلك البلدة، وما وراءها من أسرار أن الأمور هناك لها بعد آخر يختلف عما كان يظنه.
