*Uncle Tom’s Cabin* is one of the most famous novels in all of American literature. In it, the author depicted the lives of Black Americans before the Civil War, stirring the consciences of noble-hearted people and mobilizing American public opinion against the injustices inflicted upon this group of citizens. This contributed to the war for the emancipation of the enslaved (beginning in 1861) and the subsequent victory of the Northern states over the Southern states. The name Harriet Beecher Stowe became a symbol of enduring compassion, celebrated by millions who honor the work she produced. Upon its publication, *Uncle Tom’s Cabin* gained immediate renown, with new editions and translations appearing month after month. Furthermore, half a million English women signed a letter of thanks addressed to the author, and in Scotland, the poorest residents—each contributing a single penny—raised a total of one thousand pounds as a symbolic gesture of support for the movement to emancipate the enslaved.
