Writing does not emerge from a void; when we lose everything, the novel rises powerfully before us to serve as a bridge connecting us to the world around us—becoming our means of confronting a life that is not always easy. The novel is a genuine allure, a force that draws us in until we identify with it so deeply that it transforms into another homeland—distinct from the fenced-in homeland we have always known, governed by the constraints to which we must submit if we wish to exist within society. Yet, dwelling in this alternative homeland—the homeland of the novel—is no simple matter, contrary to how it may appear to many writers who have chosen to inhabit it; for this paper homeland can rise up against us at any moment, turning us from its citizens into its victims and its ash.
